Job Description

CENTRALISED ANIMAL FACILITIES

Technical Officer (Ref. 250618008-IE)

Duties 

The appointee will be required to: 

(a)    provide technical and operational support to the Centralised Animal Facilities (CAF) and its users in terms of animal handling, animal breeding, experimental techniques and daily operation;

(b)    be responsible for breeding programmes of selected species of mice and rats;

(c)    liaise with staff and students from internal units and other sister institutions on various aspects of animal husbandry and holding services;

(d)    ensure animal ethics and compliance with regulations governing the use of animals in research;

(e)    provide administrative and managerial support to the CAF, including but not limited to the provision of customer service and the maintenance of CAF’s operation;

(f)    provide training and guidance to the junior staff of the CAF;

(g)    perform purchasing duties and liaise with suppliers, contractors and external parties;

(h)    stand-in for junior staff to maintain smooth operation     of the CAF and uphold its hygienic standards; and

(i)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of CAF or his/her delegates.

The appointee will be required to work on shift and/or Saturdays/Sundays/public holidays.

Qualifications 

Applicants should have: 

(a)    a recognised degree, preferably with a master’s degree in Biotechnology, Animal Science or a related discipline;

(b)    at least five years’ hands-on experience in handling laboratory animals and animal breeding programmes;

(c)    a comprehensive working knowledge in laboratory animal facility framework and management;
(d)    a strong knowledge of the use of animals in research and/or animal ethics; and

(e)    good experience in staff management.

Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
