Rinse and soak red kudzu beans in water for about 1 hour.
Wash barley, peanuts and dates. Remove piths from dates.
Boil dates, barley, red kudzu beans and peanuts in some water, bring to the boil and turn to low heat and cook for about 90 minutes.
Add some slab sugar, cook until melted and serve.
Do not confuse red beans with red kudzu beans. They look quite similar, but kudzu beans are thinner and smaller, and also harder in texture when compared to red beans.
