Job Title: Repertory Orchestra Conductor
Position Overview:
The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of Hong Kong (MYO) is seeking an experienced and motivating conductor to lead our Repertory Orchestra (playing level approx. ABRSM Grades 5–6). The ideal candidate will have a strong track record working with developing young musicians, and the ability to design progressive training and repertoire that challenges players and prepares them for advancement to higher-level ensembles.
This role focuses on nurturing musical growth and ensemble discipline. Experience in youth orchestral development is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and conduct weekly rehearsals for the Repertory Orchestra, guiding players to improve ensemble accuracy, musical expression, and discipline.
- Select and develop appropriate repertoire and rehearsal plans that both consolidate fundamentals and progressively challenge players toward readiness for higher-level ensembles.
- Provide targeted musical coaching to address technical and ensemble issues specific to intermediate-level young musicians (approx. ABRSM Grades 5–6).
- Monitor player progress and communicate constructive musical feedback to students; offer guidance to parents when appropriate.
- Collaborate with MYO’s artistic and administrative team to plan performances (in full orchestra or ensemble setting, both locally and overseas), assessments, and development milestones aligned with the orchestra’s advancement pathway.
- Conduct auditions and evaluations for prospective and current members to support placement decisions and progression tracking.
- Maintain a positive, structured, and motivating rehearsal atmosphere that encourages responsibility, commitment, and growth.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Music degree is required; a degree or formal training in conducting is an advantage.
- Experience conducting youth or intermediate-level orchestras or ensembles, with the ability to develop technical skills and musicality.
- Solid understanding of music education principles suitable for developing young musicians (approx. ABRSM Grades 5–6).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage and motivate students.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and MYO’s administrative team.
- Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and growth-oriented learning environment.
