Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong opened in 2018. A primary school, we provide almost 1,000 places for children aged between 3 and 13 years old.
Operating within a world-class and purpose built facility, students and teachers enjoy wide access to our swimming pools, sports hall, dance studio, gymnastics centre, auditorium and recital suite. These spaces, among others, have been designed bespoke for primary aged children.

Key Responsibilities:
The Head of Chinese will:
● Report directly to the Principal as part of the Senior Leadership Team;
● Lead with high expectation and an attention to detail;
● Be responsible for the design of the Chinese Language curriculum and for the review on short, medium and long-term time scales of the Chinese Language programmes and for the implementation of subsequent initiatives, improvements and amendments;
● Work closely with the School Leaders and academic committees to ensure that the programme of Chinese Language is well integrated into the whole school curriculum and policies.
● Play a key role in all selection of Chinese Language teachers to ensure that a culture of professional ambition and aspiration prevails, supported by a continuous commitment to professional development.
● Participate in the Curriculum and Teaching and Learning Committees;
● Support the ongoing process of policy review and implementation;
● Monitor and track student attainment to ensure that expectations remain ambitious and challenging;
● Liaise closely with parents of Shrewsbury students.
Professional Expectations:
The Head of Chinese will:
● demonstrate a high level of personal expertise in Chinese;
● have a minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience;
● be able to find creative solutions to arising challenges posed;
● lead positively and with integrity.
● have a diligent professional highly skilled in working with people at all levels within the organisation;
● have excellent listening and inter-personal skills willing and able to experiment and take risks to achieve the best possible outcomes for Shrewsbury students;
● is inspired at the prospect of working in an international context integrating a Chinese Language programme into a variety of curriculum contexts and teaching and learning paradigms;
● have a proven track record of selecting high caliber teachers and then generating a collaborative team ethic within the department;
● be a flexible and collaborative team player comfortable in working across the boundaries of Job Descriptions;
● have excellent bi-lingual communications skills (Chinese and English);
● be comfortable in working in a competitive environment and achieving the ambitious targets established in the business and student enrollment plans;
● have an ability to effectively assign task responsibility to others and then monitor the progress of task execution;
● be capable of resolving issues arising from operations.
Child Safeguarding:
Shrewsbury International School is committed to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful candidate will be required to:
● Attend regular in-house child protection and safeguarding programmes and sign a Code of Conduct;
● Play a leading role in promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all students in the school;
● Report to the Designated or Deputy Safeguarding Lead any concerns they have for the welfare of a student;
● Report to the Designated or Deputy Safeguarding Lead any unsafe practices witnessed within the school as outlined in The School’s Speak Out Policy;
● Keep professional relationships with students where personal boundaries are respected and maintained.
Requirements:
● International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC) prior to the start of contract;
● Formal proof of identity with photo ID (Original Driving License / Passport);
● 3 signed, confidential references (one of which will be from the candidate’s current headteacher) before the start of contract;
● Verification of original qualifications.
