Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Educational Assistant to join our Individual Needs (IN) Department at West Island School from August 2025. This is a full-time, 10.5-month position (summer break is unpaid leave).

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-class support, small group instruction, and one-on-one assistance to students with diverse learning needs, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and social/emotional/mental health challenges
  • Support students' academic, social, and well-being needs through differentiated strategies and individualized education plans
  • Collaborate closely with subject teachers across the curriculum

In addition to working with students, the role will involve:

  • Assisting in the development and implementation of individualized education plans
  • Providing behavioural support and intervention as needed
  • Contributing to the assessment and monitoring of student progress.
  • Contributing to the Homework club.

Reporting To: Head of Individual Needs Faculty

Requirements

Experience:

  • Preferred: Degree or qualification related to supporting students with learning differences
  • 1-2 years' experience working with secondary students, particularly in subjects like Math, English, and Science
  • Experience working in an international, multilingual, and multicultural school environment is an asset
  • Familiarity with language & curriculum demands in secondary schools

Abilities & Knowledge:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to use technology
  • Empathetic and flexible in supporting students with diverse needs
  • Confident working with secondary school-aged students
  • Ability to multi-task and flexibility in coping with the changing needs of the job
  • Working knowledge of the use of basic ICT skills – Microsoft Office, Excel, inspiration, and/or a willingness to learn and upskill

Competencies:

  • Willingness to create support resources and supplementary work for students where necessary to assist the subject specialist teacher (eg., developing writing frames/proformas/taking notes)
  • A flexible approach with complex students and the ability to foster relationships with students being supported
  • Willingness to support the whole school life through CAS activities or field trips
  • Willingness to participate in Continuous Professional Development
