Job Description

West Island School is seeking to appoint an Educational Assistant (Chinese Language) on a temporary full-time basis to start from Mid-August 2025.  This is a temporary position from mid-August to mid-December 2025 (Term 1).

Teaching and Learning

  • Familiar with the Chinese curriculum, teaching methods, assessments, and daily school routines.

  • Understand age-specific learning characteristics, particularly related to language acquisition.

  • Support students in their learning by clarifying instructions, answering questions, and providing motivation.

  • Facilitate group activities, including oral practice, writing tasks, guided reading, and group projects, as needed.

  • Provide individual assistance to students requiring extra support.

  • Help maintain classroom discipline and ensure smooth class routines before, during, and after lessons.

  • Communicate student progress and relevant information to the Chinese Department.

Planning

  • Collaborate with Chinese teachers and other EAs to plan lessons.

  • Participate in departmental or year-level planning sessions.

  • Plan student activities as directed by the department.

  • Assist in the development, production, and management of educational resources.

  • Order resources as needed for the Chinese Department.

Performs other duties and assumes accountabilities as apparent or as delegated, including mutually agreed upon objectives

REPORTING TOHead of Chinese Language

REQUIREMENTS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Native or near-native proficiency in Chinese, with accurate pronunciation in Putonghua, and functional English skills.

  • Relevant qualifications or training in education or support roles, along with foundational skills in learning technology and resource management.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers and the Head of Department.

  • At least 1-2 years of experience in a similar support role.

  • Previous experience working with students in a school or university setting would be an advantage.

ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE:

  • Confident self-starter with excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Communicate with students effectively, assertively, and in a caring manner when necessary

  • Excellent organizational abilities, problem-solving and follow up skills

  • A friendly manner in relation to staff and students is essential

  • Maintain a harmonious working relationship with colleagues

  • Ability to be flexible, to work independently, and use initiative

  • Ability to work under pressure & Self motivated

  • Be a team player who is willing to share ideas and resources and who is ready to offer help

  • Good PC skills, with proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and Google docs
