Head of Secondary (Guangzhou, China)

Brief Overview of role:

The Head of Secondary provides a challenging, effective, well-rounded, safe international educational experience for the students attending Years 7-12 at an International School Guangzhou.


He/she should be an adaptable educator and innovative curriculum leader. She/he should be a good motivator, communicator, administrator and an exemplary teacher who should be capable of making a significant contribution towards the leadership and management of an expanding International K-12 School. She/he should be able to provide professional leadership, secure high quality teaching, make effective use of resources and ensure improved standards of achievement for all pupils.


The Head of Secondary is responsible for ensuring all daily operations of the secondary school are effective and efficient. He /She is responsible for the direction and supervision of all personnel who perform their respective functions within the secondary school (years 7-12).


Main Duties


Translate the school’s Mission and Values into measurable actions, monitor, evaluate and adjust as needed.


Demonstrate pedagogical leadership aligned with the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate MYP and DP programmes.


Ensure that there are effective procedures in place, supported by policies, to identify the varied needs of students, both at admission and whilst enrolled, to ensure that all students may benefit from the school’s programmes.


o Responsible for the coordination of all secondary school operations, activities and programmes.


o Actively promote international education opportunities for students to develop global leadership skills and an understanding of global issues.


Responsible for developing, monitoring, evaluating and promoting the secondary school instructional programme.


Work with IB Programme Coordinators and Deputies to ensure current innovative educational practice, relevant curriculum content and regular assessment of the educational quality.


Develop school improvement plans with staff that aligns with the schools long and short-term goals.


Recognize and promote the use of Information Technology as an essential 21st century learning tool. Effectively use technology for efficient and effective administrative practices.


Lead the production of secondary curriculum and promotional documentation.


Manage a secondary school budget and lead future budget planning.


Organize programmes for assistance and orientation for new teachers.


Responsible for development of the master schedule / timetable


Responsible for preparation of the teacher handbook and parent/student handbook.


Develop and implement the secondary school master calendar in the context of the whole school calendar.


Coordinate student advisory groups and programmes.


Develop community contacts and works with community organizations.


Develop procedures for maintenance of permanent records.


Remain cognizant of educational developments by maintaining professional memberships and contacts and by pursuing personal professional development.


Work with the Head of Year and House in maintaining a consistent and fair behavior management Behavior for Learning system for students.


Supervise and approve field trips, staff development activities, assemblies, report card distribution, parent/teacher conferences, and other special events.


Attend secondary school performances and fixtures.


Maintain a positive, interactive and transparent relationship with the school community.


Contribute actively and creatively support the whole-school Administrative team.


Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
