Applications are invited for appointment as Research Associate/Post-doctoral Fellow in NLP for Clinical Medicine, to commence as soon as possible, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance.

The appointee will join the Laboratory of Data Discovery for Health (D24H), a start-up company incorporated by The University of Hong Kong (HKU) that is led by senior faculty members of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at HKU. The D24H sets to play pivotal role in gathering and curating massive, unique data resources and to develop new, deep, frontier analytics in protecting global public health and improving individual healthcare through precision medicine.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or above in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Statistics, or related disciplines;
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, R, Java, and C/C++, along with experience in relevant libraries and frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn) and environments (e.g., Ubuntu, BRAT);
  • Publication records in notable NLP conferences (e.g., ACL, EMNLP) and impactful informatics/medical informatics journals (as first or senior author within the past 3-5 years);
  • Extensive experience with deep learning architectures and prompt engineering, including text classification, named entity recognition, entity linking, sentiment analysis, text translation, question answering, text generation, or other relevant NLP tasks;
  • Proficiency in machine learning techniques, including deep learning, neural networks, and statistical modelling, with a focus on applying these techniques to clinical data; and
  • Familiarity with clinical terminologies, medical ontologies (e.g., SNOMED CT, UMLS), Electronic Health Records (EHRs), and healthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR, OMOP) is preferred.

Experience:

  • In-depth knowledge and a proven track record of successfully designing, implementing, and deploying NLP models and systems for real-world applications, preferably in the healthcare domain;
  • Proven experience in objectively evaluating NLP models using appropriate metrics according to the requirements of the NLP tasks;
  • Experience working with Electronic Health Record (EHR) data, including pre-processing, handling unstructured text data, structured records, and extracting meaningful information from clinical notes, discharge summaries, and other EHR sources;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including clinicians, data scientists, software engineers, and healthcare stakeholders, and to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions;
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Applicants with higher qualification may be considered for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow.
