The Building Management System (BMS) Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of data center infrastructure. This position focuses on the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of key systems—including HVAC, power distribution, lighting, and fire safety—to support 24/7 data center operations. A strong background in mission-critical environments is essential to maintain optimal environmental conditions and prevent downtime.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the day-to-day automation, maintenance and troubleshooting across the facility to include verifying efficient operation of systems and related equipment.
- Perform engineering studies, project feasibility assessments, and cost estimates.
- Act as the system owner for the Building Automation Systems (BAS), Building Management System (BMS), Power management system (PMS), Critical Equipment Monitoring System (CEMS), Life Safety and Security Systems.
- Administer and execute CEMS system management tasks including but not limited to, system access level control, user access management, system audits, software backups, data entry, and alarm notification updates. Support equipment moves, new installation, and removals.
- Support the development and execution of preventative maintenance plans and maintain system/software licenses for all systems.
- Identify implement changes to improve system health, capacity and energy efficiency
- Oversee work of vendors, contractors and OEM representatives performing systems maintenance.
- Complete Work Orders in a timely manner following proper documentation procedures, using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Support Capital Projects and participate in project design reviews and project commissioning activities.
- Assist in the development of the Scope of Facilities (SOF), and ensure each project follows the client’s standards and practices.
- Review commissioning documentation for system additions, modifications and retrofits.
- Train workers and less skilled technicians on safety procedures related to building operations.
- Proficient in industrial protocols like BACnet, Modbus and other Open protocols (hardware and software required).
- Maintain advanced technical skills with solid workings of Automation Platforms.
- Working knowledge of building energy management systems. Has good understanding of data center efficiency & Controls; but not limited to BMS Control, pneumatic controls, mechanical Control systems, lighting controls, access control and backup emergency systems for efficient functioning of Data centers.
- Working knowledge on field instrumentation such as temperature, pressure, and flow devices typically connected to an automation system.
- Ability to diagnose, repair, and return all automation systems to efficient operation condition.
- Capable of working out in the field and perform troubleshooting of BMS controller & IO devices. Capability to proactively identifying SPOF’s and suggest improvements to the existing BMS system to reduce BMS-related system failures, and to improve the efficiency of the building
- Work within the team to provide 24/7- 365 days per year coverage for Automation systems.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, travel between facilities.
- Proficient knowledge in operation and maintenance of Microsoft Windows based computers, workstations, and server along with Microsoft Office applications and web based computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS),MS project’s, Databases and MS Visio.
- Review routine checks for correct operation of all equipment in location that include BMS control of systems.
- Recommend and drive to implement variables and adjustment as required to ensure systems are operating correctly within parameters
BMS Systems, Application and Service Process Control and Compliance
- Daily/Weekly/Monthly review of Reports, Trends, abnormalities in the system and analysis
- Incident Management, Change Management, Event Analysis and Provide technical advice and input on BMS continuous improvement opportunity
- Root Cause Analysis to ensure satisfactory closure
- Audit Handling and Risk Management
- Spare and BMS asset handling.
- Ability to single handedly drive BMS project with Vendor, Consultant, and other 3rd party in sync with internal project team.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Automation, Instrumentation, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology or related fields preferred, but not required.
- In lieu of B.S. degree, must have a minimum of ten (10) years as an Automation Engineer or Instrumentation Engineer or equivalent in a relevant work environment, or a combination of education, military service, and/or practical work experience.
- 3- 7 years of relevant facilities maintenance, construction, and repair experience in a commercial or industrial setting.
- Experience with data centre equipment/environments, including switch gears, generators, chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, controls, security monitoring systems, fire safety systems, and an understanding of start-up /commissioning processes preferred
- Focus with the ability to handle multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
- Eye for details; and has done troubleshooting of BMS / IBMS systems in a live system.
- Hands-on experience in Data center operation and projects.
- Good interpersonal skills including good verbal and written communication in English.
